SOIL was the first theatre piece done by Migrant vocies and was a forum theatre piece that depicted the lives of 2 characters in 2 plays. The Story of Shah was about a construction worker who had trouble adapting to Singapore, the working environment and was caught by the police for something he did not do.
The Story of Atin was about a domestic worker who had to work tirelessly to take care of her employer's wheelchair bound mother. She too, has trouble adapting to Singapore and being away home.
Forum Theatre is a type of theatre created by Augusto Boal as part of what he calls his "Theatre of the Oppressed". In this process the actors or audience members could stop a performance, often a short scene or anti-play in which a character was being oppressed in some way. The audience would suggest different actions for the actors to carry out on-stage in an attempt to change the outcome of what they were seeing. This was an attempt to undo the traditional actor partition and bring audience members into the performance, to have an input into the dramatic action they were watching, and to be in the shoes of the characters.
