Blinded, Binded & Trapped in Love
Co-presented with HOME as part of International Migrants' Day Celebrations
Sponsored by Supported by & Lee Foundation
16 December 2007
Lembu Road Open Space

Blinded, Binded & Trapped in Love was a collection of 3 forum theatre pieces performed by migrant workers in Singapore.  Set in their everyday workplace, these vignettes provided insight into the real lives and experiences of construction and domestic workers living among us. Trapped in an alienating environment characterized by distinct power differentials and asymmetry of information, the characters are forced to make choices. The audience was encouraged to observe, intervene and influence the course and outcome of the play. Devised and directed by Chris Lee, a local arts practitioner, Blinded, Binded & Trapped in Love was Migrant Voices '2nd forum theatre production following the successful run of SOIL, in collaboration with Drama Box in November 06.

It was Migrant Voices biggest production in 2007, bringing live drama to the migrant worker enclave of Little India.

Special Preview of Film: "Ghosts"
Organized by Golden Village
6 August 2007
Golden Village Vivo City

The film tells the story of Ai Qin, a Chinese immigrant to the UK. It follows her from China to the UK and looks at the work she does in the food industry. It reveals that the UK's food industry is heavily dependent on underpaid, expolititive, migrant labour. Eventually she starts work cockle-picking at Morecambe Bay. The film begins and ends with the 2004 Morecambe Bay cockling disaster, in which 23 illegal workers lost their lives while cockle-picking.

The screening was followed by a discussion on the issues raised by the film, lead by Braema Mathiaparanam, and is organised by the British Council, Singapore Film Society Migrant Voices, Transient Workers Count, Too and Golden Village.

Tales Within Borders
Organized in Partnership with the Singapore Drama Educators Association as part of Celebrate Drama 2007
28th & 29th July 2007
Ngee Ann Auditorium, Asian Civilizations Museum

They build our homes, our mega malls and care for our families. There are many who toil 7 days a week, 365 days a year. They are in our midst, living on our lands, but do we know them? Speak their names as our friends, our neighbours, our family? Tales Within Borders looks at the silent gaze and the inner voices of migrant workers who live, play and work amongst us.

Tales Within Borders was a multi-ethnic performance as well as a visual arts, photo and video exhibition that celebrated the diversity in language and cultural heritage that are brought to our shores by our migrant worker friends. Through the performance, they shared their art, music and stories; the personal and the public, the intimate and the mundane. This piece also included a forum on migrant issues and a talk back with the creators and actors of the piece.
